The word Tharu is believed to be derived from sthavir, meaning followers of Theravada Buddhism. The Tharu community belongs to the Terai lowlands, amid the Shivaliks or lower Himalayas. Tharus live in both India and Nepal. In Indian Terai, they live mostly in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh , and Bihar.

Madhuri Barthwal is a folk singer of Uttarakhand, India. She is the first woman to be a music composer in All India Radio. She is said to be the first female musician from Uttarakhand to become a music teacher. Padmshri Dr. Madhuri Barthwal is not just a musician or composer but she is the flag bearer of Uttarakhand's folk art, music , culture and traditions.
